Cataract is one of the major causes of avoidable visual disability in children.  Combatting child blindness is one of the most cost-effective health interventions and kids who have their sight restored are given an average of 50 years of sight.

In addition to preventing children from seeing the world around them, blindness and visual impairment cause significant changes to early development, leading to delays in crawling, walking, and talking. Over 90% of visually impaired children in low income countries are deprived of education, which diminishes career opportunities and creates stress within families to support the needs of the blind child.

Children’s eye care needs can be more challenging and urgent than those of adults because their care requires general anesthetic, expensive equipment and long-term follow-up care. General eye care centers often cannot address these needs, so one of NDCFS Foundation’s priorities is to invest in pediatric eye care infrastructure and expand child eye care services across India.

NDCFS-supported pediatric programs start with outreach through community and school screenings. Once blind and visually impaired children are identified, outreach teams arrange services at the nearest hospital offering pediatric ophthalmology. Families are given transportation, accommodation and food during this time. Meanwhile, parents receive counselling and long-term follow-up plans to ensure children have healthy vision for life.

Preventing blindness in children is a collective effort requiring the collaboration of health workers, families, teachers, community members, policymakers, and counselors. NDCFS is dedicated to supporting every part of this effort to end childhood blindness.

Children who have their sight restored will benefit from a lifetime of opportunities that come with good vision. They can play with friends, succeed in school, and pursue their dreams. Thanks to sight restoration and blindness prevention, these children have a chance at a brighter future.
